afropunk premiere: amber mimz captures the vibe of cali in ‘kali love’ video

August 4, 2014

Today we’re premiering the new video from soulful artist Amber Mimz.
Info: “Sun, shorts, blue skies and good vibes… That’s Kali Love. Mixed with some good company makes it all the more sweeter. Almost like new every time I get to bask in the rays of it all. It’s just love.”

“Kali Love” was written, produced and performed by Amber Mimz (with co-production by Steve Wyreman) in Los Angeles, CA. The song also features Marion “OJ” Ross on trumpet.
Amber Mimz says: “This particular number was throughly influenced by The Parliament and Fela Kuti. I just added my own vibes and story to it. I love the rhythms and bass lines of Afro beat and the theatrical sexiness and melodies of funk from The Parliament, their use of emotion as sound elements back then was unreal. I wanted to capture a moment in time through sound.
The video was created by my amazing team HBS&Co (Hearts, Brain Soul and Company). Our shooter and video mastermind Charlie Brown brought it all to life! The two of us had visions of this video almost 2 years ago and 2 years later we were sitting in a latin restaurant on Olympic Blvd creating the video treatment for a 4 day shoot. We wanted to capture some of my favorite spots and I was dead set on featuring this phenomenal dancer and friend Shiva Ware! Her movements are so connected to the music and I knew she would bring another element I had yet to incorporate. I swear during shooting I got emotional watching someone move so fluidly to something I had created. We also wanted to capture the vibe of Cali, the beauty, the art(chitecture), the colors, the random shit and the option of (sparking a jay [and]) having the doors open to let the breeze blow in.”
