Music
feature: wtf variety? elvis presley did not invent rock & roll.
So Variety thinks Elvis Presley invented Rock & Roll, huh? They published a piece on saturday excitingly entitled ‘Elvis Presley invented rock and roll 60 years ago’. Coming from such a well-known magazine, it’s a pity their editors let that one slip. Fortunately, their readers let them know what time it is with the hashtag #varietyheadlines and Variety issued a half-assed “apology”/postscript after changing the headline of the article (yet keeping its erroneous spirit throughout the piece).
Have they ever heard of Chuck Berry? Little Richard? etc.
By his own admission, Presley repackaged music that was created by Black musicians.
One of the commenters below the article stated: “[producer Sam] Phillips often declared: ‘If I could find a white man who had the Negro sound and the Negro feel, I could make a billion dollars.’ This was the 1950s and the South, after all.”
Get it together, Variety!
