feature: ‘alien cartoon’ afrofuturist fashion show at dakar’s 100-year-old train station

April 30, 2014

Hi guys, check out the ‘Alien Cartoon’ project by Senegalese designer Selly Raby Kane and her team. They have an Indiegogo campaign if you’d like to support.
Info from the press release: “With Alien Cartoon, her new collection that will be presented in May 2014, Selly Raby Kane throws herself into an urban and futurist Africa, populated by fantastical creatures. What would become of technology, modes of transport, cinema, literature and fashion in a metropolis where humans and Aliens co-inhabit? What would be the cultural expressions of this hybrid society? What would its streets and pedestrians look like? With Alien Cartoon, Selly Raby Kane answers these questions.
An artistic manifestation that combines performances and a fashion show, Alien Cartoon is also part of a committed act of citizenship; to continue the plea campaign Save The Old Lady, launched a few months ago by the collective Les Petites Pierres. This is Selly Raby Kane’s own way of celebrating the 100th birthday of the Dakar train station. Alien Cartoon’s exuberant, poetic and afro-futurist universe will welcome a public of 2000 people in the space of this magnificent building, today left abandoned.”
