the basquiat musical is going to be a real thing?

First they put DIDDY in the ‘Raisin in the Sun’ musical/movie and THEN they made the Color Purple with American Idol star Fantasia (who, granted, was FABULOUS) and now there is this: a Basquiat musical in the wings.

Now before I get myself in a tisy about something that doesn’t exist yet, I do find it odd that this gets a green-light nearly 30 years post mortem, when “Bring it On” is currently on broadway. Could it be, Johnny Mainstream JUST figured out HOW MUCH could be made off Jean-Michel, being that his art just became the most expensive piece of art to ever sell. Like, ever in the history of Art History. CHA-CHING, he says! “We’ll make T-shirts, and oven mitts, and maybe even a dag-on musical!” People who have been wearing Basquiat tee’s obliviously, are going to love it, and it’s going to sweep the Tony’s… But maybe they’ll do it some justice and won’t ruin all of our lives?

FELA! was a SMASH hit that was respectable, beautiful and timely. Hell, featuring Patti (freaking) LaBelle. THIS DOESN’T HAVE TO BE TERRIBLE. But will it? Oh man, why don’t they just keep making Spiderman movies and keep my blood pressure down!
