hardcore from paris! as they burn’s newest album will, love, life will straight up kick your ass. #soundcheck

February 20, 2013

Parisian deathcore band As They Burn’s latest record Will, Love, Life is a punishing piece of hardcore. The band marries quasi-progressive song structures to tried-and-true hardcore pummeling for a sound that owes a little bit to extreme metal luminaries Meshuggah. The band’s first for Victory Records is less melodic than previous efforts (the lead guitar bits and occasional crooning of Aeon’s War are all but gone) but the band’s ability to completely kick your ass has never been better.

Singer Kevin Trevor and drummer Milton Bakech steal the show here with their guttural death screams and heartstopping double bass respectively. (it would probably be weird if it were the other way around) Rising from a low growl to a ear-piercing shriek over the span of even a single word, Kevin performs the sort of vocal acrobatics that have earned the band a reputation as a badass live act. Though they don’t offer much new to the deathcore / tech metal game, they do what they do extremely well. Standout tracks “The Conscious Man,” “When Everything Falls Apart,” and “F.R.E.A.K.S.” are required listening for hardcore fans. Though current tour dates are only in Europe, here’s hoping being signed to Victory will bring them stateside in the near future.
