#soundcheck: arthur walwin, formerly of post-hardcore band this part is us, shows his sensitive side on “for one more night.”

October 24, 2012

UK post-hardcore band This Part Is Us played their final show this past spring, but lead singer Arthur Walwin is back with his new solo project. His debut EP For One More Night is decidedly softer, but Walwin brings the same emotional intensity and range to this set. This is post-post-hardcore.

Walwin’s new project sounds a bit like Keane meets Ariel Kill Him (a Swedish emo band that meant a whole lot to me for like a month in 2003. Don’t judge…). For One More Night replaces distorted guitars with sentimental pianos and shout-alongs with melodies that can only be described as “soaring.” The tracks are definitely aimed more at the mainstream, but Walwin’s voice has never sounded stronger. Current single “All For You,” especially is a radio hit waiting to happen. But it’s opening track “Blame It On The Weather” that really shines. It sounds like Arthur Walwin is one of the few people (I happen to be one of them. Matt Pryor’s mom is the other one…) who thought The Get Up Kids were at their best on On A Wire. It turns out they were just ahead of their time.

The EP is out now and available on iTunes and other fine vendors of mp3s. Walwin and company are about to head out on a UK tour. Check their social networks for dates and details.
