This FREE concert presents emerging, mid-career, and legacy Jazz artists that represent revolutionary talent and artistry. In the tradition of the Free Form jazz movement we are interested in ways that artist are challenging the boundaries of their practice and the jazz genre by interrogating conventions in areas such as collaboration, harmonic structures, experimental improvisation, interdisciplinary work, and instrumentation.  Past artists have included Billy Bang, Olu Dara, Melvin Gibbs, Alice Smith, Jose James and Gregory Porter.

England’s Nu-Soul legend was the major influence for America’s Neo Soul movement of the late ‘90s. Notable artists such as D’Angelo, Erykah Badu, Maxwell, and Jill Scott all claim Omar as a major influence. His distinct bass laden melodies make his groove unmistakably OMAR and undeniable.

Taylor McFerrin

Taylor McFerrin has sustained an major buzz in the Future Soul scene
ever since his 2007 EP “Broken Vibes” gained heavy rotation by DJ’s
such as Benji B, Gilles Peterson and Garth Trinidad. His
musical style is equally influenced by the legends of 60’s / 70’s soul
and the kings of the Modern Beat Generation. Taylor’s first full length LP, titled “EarlyRiser” is due out on Flying Lotus’ Brainfeeder Record Label, Fall
 2012.

About Weeksville
Now:
Weeksville Heritage Center is a multidimensional museum dedicated to preserving the history of the 19th century African-American community of Weeksville, Brooklyn. Using a contemporary lens, we provide programming to activate this unique history through the presentation innovative, vanguard, experimental programs. Weeksville advances its mission through history, preservation, visual and performing arts, ecology and the built environment   

Then:
During the 19th century the village of Weeksville was a vibrant and independent free African American community. The settlement is named for freed African American, James Weeks, who was among a group of African American landowners who acquired the property in 1838 to create an intentional community. The three historic houses, which date to the nineteenth century and portray Weeksville during the eras of 1840-1860, 1900 and 1930, are located on the historic Hunterfly Road and represent Weeksville’s few remaining domestic structures. WHC emphasizes Weeksville’s history of  sanctuary, refuge, independence/self-sufficiency, self-determination, activism and their contemporary relevance.

Future:
WHC is completing construction on a new 19,000 square foot Certified LEED Gold Sustainable Education and Cultural Arts Building which includes a resource center, classrooms and media lab, workshop, collection spaces, 700 sq. ft. gallery and 200-seat performance space. The 1.5 acre outdoor landscaped space includes a micro farm and heritage based botanic collection.
