janelle monáe’s wondaland gets universal pictures deal

November 19, 2018

Shout out to Janelle Monáe and the entire Wondaland family for singing a deal with Universal Pictures! The first-look production agreement is with Wondaland’s multimedia division and will see Miss Monáe as CEO, the Wondaland in-house creative team, Managing Partner Mikael Moore, Creative Director Chuck Lightning and Executive Producer Nate Wonder, and Universal Pictures develop multi-genre content with a heavy emphasis on under represented voices and narratives told with groundbreaking perspectives. This deal only further solidifies Monáe’s creative partnership with Universal as she stars in their upcoming Robert Zemeckis-directed movie Welcome to Marwen, opening Dec. 21, and Focus Features’ Harriet Tubman biopic Harriet due out next year. “There is an exciting, artistic revolution taking place in our industry, and Janelle and the talented team at Wondaland are at the forefront,” said Donna Langley, Chairman, Universal Pictures. “Their forward-thinking, inclusive approach to content and storytelling make them a perfect fit for our studio.” That’s what we call afro future.
