BLACK LOVE IS ON HOLLYWOOD’S MIND

Black Love is finally getting its day in the cinematic sun with a bevy of romantic films in the works starring some of the most interesting up-and-comers in Hollywood.
We’ve been patiently awaiting the release of Barry Jenkin’s adaptation of James Baldwin’s If Beale Street Could Talk starring Stephan James (Race) and newcomer Kiki Layne. The story follows a deeply in love couple as they navigate the criminal justice system when one of them is wrongly accused of an assault, which is timely as ever.
If that doesn’t seem like your jam, John Boyega (Star Wars) and Letita Wright (Black Panther, Black Mirror) are co-starring in a sci-fi romance Hold Back the Stars. An adaptation of Katie Khan’s novel of the same name, the story follows a man and woman who resist their affair on a utopian Earth while, in real time, they’re trapped in space with only 90 minutes of oxygen left. Yikes.
Then finally, we have the Lena Waithe-written Queen and Slim directed by Insecure’s Melina Matsoukas with actors Jodie Turner-Smith and Academy Award-nominee Daniel Kaluuya. This one follows a couple after they’re stopped by the police and the subsequent effects it has on their lives. Sounds interesting.
So, whatever your cup of tea is, there’s gonna be a little something for everyone (for a change). Can’t wait to see how these projects develop.
