the solution is not to detain kids & parents together, it’s to stop detaining asylum seekers

The Executive Order President Trump signed yesterday is not progress towards liberating detained migrants and immigrants and their families from internment camps. What the order does, hopefully, do is keep families together, but they’re still behind gates and fences. Many of the families that are being detained are asylum seekers, if they aren’t being turned away outright at the border they are legally allowed to cross. In normal circumstances, these people would be allowed to integrate into their new society while awaiting asylum hearings.  Under Trump’s “zero-tolerance policy” E.O., families will just be imprisoned in the camps indefinitely instead. Which the ACLU and other activist orgs say violates the Flores settlement of 1997.

More than 2,300 children have been separated from their families since May 2018. There is no plan to reunite those families anytime soon.
