This just in: the story of Alvin Ailey is getting it’s due on the big screen and basically… I think it’s safe to say black and brown cinema is taking the cake from 2018 and beyond.

As one of the- if not the- most influential figures in the world of African American  modern dance and art in general, Ailey’s legacy is one bled into the fabric of black art and history, and definitely serves as the backbone for Black NYC dance collectives across the spectrum.

Performing alongside the rest of Alvin Ailey Dance Theater collective for the first time in March of 1958, from then until his death in 1989 (at 58) Ailey has choreographed piece after piece of riveting, conversation-starting artistry, and his story is one deserved to be shared and preserved.

With Fox Searchlight working closely with Artistic Director Robert Battle and Artistic Director Emerita Judith Jamison– along with securing the right to Jennifer Dunning’s biography Alvin Ailey: A Life In Dance- Ailey’s life’s works will be paid the ultimate homage.

Look out for the trailer and release of the upcoming film, and check out some of my favorite Ailey moments below!
