stream the trailer for the striking new james baldwin documentary, “i am not your negro”

November 14, 2016

There’s something about a title that also reads as an affirmation that strikes such a necessary chord in these trying times. Director Raoul Peck knew what he was doing when he chose this particular phrase from James Baldwin’s unfinished manuscript about the civil rights movements key players: Martin Luther King Jr., Malcolm X, and slightly lesser known figure Medgar Evers. The chilling trailer features sound bytes from an interview with Baldwin juxtaposed with the visage of several Black people in portraiture staring intently into the camera, searing the audience with the heat of a hundred freedom fighters. The film opens in theaters on February 3rd, so we’ll be counting down the days, but ‘til then, enjoy the trailer below.
