With a soulful rasp, and a skill for anthemic hooks, Birmingham-based Amacio Favor makes hard rock descended from Living Colour and Soundgarden, but with a touch of old soul thrown in. His debut record Breakout kneeled hard on big riffs, big drums, and bigger vocals. He’s currently at work on the followup, to be titled This Is Rebel Music.

Title track “Rebel Music” takes down the mainstream music industry and the faux fortune and fame that comes from competing on shows like The Voice and American Idol. While that may be an easy target, his songs are defiant in the face of an industry that’s increasingly stratified between the incredibly successful and the rest of us just scraping by. “My Own Drum” follows a similar trajectory, with Favor proudly showing “both middle fingers in the air.” But it’s when Favor shows his introspective side that the music really kicks. “Too Much (Is Never Enough)” finds Favor frustrated over a dying relationship. “How long must I scream / before I get your attention?” The song features Favor’s best vocal performance and strongest melodies to date. If you wanted people’s attention, you’ve got it. So, I guess about this long?
