“Amazing 9 year old Asean Johnson brings the crowd to their feet at Chicago school closings rally”
May 23, 2013
This week Chicago decided to go ahead with Mayor Rahm Emanuel’s plan to close 49 public schools in effort to combat the decreasing and highly inefficient budget. This kind of decision is easy to make when you don’t have to put a face to the thousands of kids being thrown out of their school and these kids now face quite uncertain futures as the plans of how Chicago will move on don’t give the communities facing this issue much confidence.
Before the decision was made on Wednesday, 9 year old Asean Johnson got the chance to plead a bit of his case at one of the rally’s to stop the school closings. He starts off coming right after Mayor Emanuel stating “He is not caring about our schools, he is not caring about our safety, he only cares about himself.” If this loss of faith in the Chicago’s leader’s, present in 9 year olds, can do nothing to change the way we handle our failing education system then the question is what can we do next to aid the situation.
As Mr. Johnson said “You should be investing in these schools not closing them. You should be supporting these schools not closing them.” And we all need to start up the chant and join Chicago because “Education is a right, and that is why we have to fight!”
